Palakkad: A Name Rooted in Forests and Heritage

Nestled at the foot of the Western Ghats, Palakkad is a district in Kerala known for its vast paddy fields, gentle hills, and cultural richness.

The name Palakkad is believed to have originated from two Malayalam words — pala” (a type of tree commonly found in the region) and kadu” (meaning forest). So, Palakkad can be loosely translated as “forest of pala trees” or “land of forests.” This is a fitting description for a place once covered in thick greenery and still home to lush natural landscapes. In earlier times, Palakkad was also known as Palakkattussery. The name Palakkad isn’t just a label — it’s a reflection of the district’s soul. It tells a story of trees, forests, and the people who’ve lived in harmony with nature for generations. It also serves as a reminder of the region’s ecological and cultural importance.
