Wall of Peace Brings Art and Unity to Palakkad
In Cherpulassery, a town in Kerala’s Palakkad district, a remarkable public art project known as the “Wall of Peace” has been created by artist and Banaras Hindu University professor Suresh K. Nair, along with his students. This 7,000-square-foot mural adorns the boundary wall of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, serving as a vibrant tapestry of the town’s rich history and cultural heritage.
The mural is structured into 25 panels, each depicting significant local events, traditions, and figures. Notable portrayals include freedom fighter Mozhikunnath Brahmadattan Namboodiripad, Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Cherpulassery, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The artwork also celebrates local customs such as the Tholppava Koothu (shadow puppetry), Theyyam and Thira (ritualistic dances), and the town’s enthusiasm for football. A distinctive feature of the mural is the word “peace” inscribed in 250 languages, symbolizing a universal message of harmony and unity.
This initiative, completed in just 12 days, was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Professor Nair, his students, local laborers, and the community. The “Wall of Peace” stands as a testament to the power of art in fostering communal harmony and preserving cultural narratives.
