Breaking Barriers and Breathing New Life in Kalyanasougandhikam

Kathakali, Kerala’s iconic dance-drama, has always held a special place in the hearts of art lovers. But on a recent evening in Kootanad, Palakkad, the staging of Kalyanasougandhikam as part of the KMS Namboothirippad remembrance and the Keliravam event, brought a truly refreshing experience to the audience being one that celebrated tradition while embracing innovation.

Celebrating Art and Legacy

Organized by the Peringodu Kathakali Promotion Society, the event was not just a performance but a tribute to Kerala’s rich artistic heritage. The classic Kathakali play Kalyanasougandhikam came alive on stage with colorful costumes, expressive gestures, and the rhythmic beats of this ancient art form.

The evening was owned by the talented cast and crew who brought the epic story to life.

Kalamandalam Pradeep brought a fresh and emotional depth to Bheeman, proving that even familiar roles can be reimagined. Haripriya Namboothiri broke barriers as Panchali, delivering a powerful and graceful performance that earned special praise on the male-dominated Kathakali stage.

The Magic of Sound and Rhythm

No Kathakali performance is complete without its powerful music and percussion. On percussion, Kalamandalam Udayan Namboothiri (chenda) and Kalamandalam Kuttinarayanan (maddalam) brought energy and rhythm, making each scene vibrant and alive.

Makeup and Costumes

The detailed makeup (chutti) by Kalamandalam Satheesan turned the actors into larger than life figures. Rajan and Shani managed the stage smoothly, while the authentic costumes and props from Cheruthuruthy Kathakali School enhanced the visual splendor.

For the Palakkad audience, this staging of Kalyanasougandhikam was more than a night at the theatre. It was a celebration of culture, creativity, and community. The event honored KMS Namboothirippad’s memory while highlighting Kathakali’s blend of tradition, modernity, and inclusivity.
