Yakkara St Mary’s Orthodox Church: A New Milestone in Palakkad

Yakkara St Mary’s Orthodox Church in Palakkad, established in 1969, is set to become a Major Parish church. The announcement was made in an official order by Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III and read out by Metropolitan Geevarghese Mar Pachomios during the Vaangippu festival (Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) on August 16, 2025.

Community Impact

What began with fewer than 30 families in 1969 has flourished into a dynamic parish of over 175 families and 600+ members. The church’s growth has been fueled by its inclusive approach and robust organizational structure, hosting active groups such as the youth movement and the Marth Mariam Vanitha Samajam. Their engagement in social initiatives is worth mentioning they provide aid for marriages, medical treatments, and educational needs, demonstrating their commitment to both parishioners and the wider community.

The Path to Major Parish Status

The order’s reading during the Vaangippu festival was unexpected and added to the celebrations, bringing joy to all attendees. Next, the church’s general body will meet on August 31 to formally approve the elevation. If passed, the official declaration will take place on September 14, at which point the church will be recognized as Palakkad St. Mary’s Major Parish Church.

Celebrations and Traditions

Not just an administrative milestone, this elevation coincides with deep spiritual celebrations, notably the Vaangippu festival. Events such as the Feast of the Dormition held August 10–15 attract parish families and guests, reinforcing the church’s role as a cultural as well as a religious anchor in Palakkad. Beyond the title, becoming a Major Parish recognizes and empowers the church’s vibrant activity and social work. It signals the continued rise of Yakkara as a center for faith, culture, and community development, setting a model for other parishes in Kerala.
