The Choolannur Peafowl Sanctuary, locally called Mayiladumpara (“the rock where peacocks dance”), covers about 500 hectares of forest on the Palakkad-Thrissur border. Set up in 2007 and managed by the Kerala Forest Department, it is home to over 200 peacocks and many other bird species, making it a haven for birdwatchers and photographers.
