The town is embracing a wave of modernization, blending its rich heritage with contemporary urban development. The much anticipated urban renewal project, a dream for many years, is now in its concluding phase, with the ribbon cutting ceremony anticipated in July. What’s to be expected?

Upgraded Road Network:
A major focus has been modernizing the town’s roads. The four-kilometer stretch from Nellaya City to Kacherikkunnu has been brought up to contemporary standards. Most notably, the central area—from the Government Hospital to the new bus stand—has been expanded into a four-lane road, easing the chronic traffic congestion that once troubled Cherpulassery.

Improved Drainage and Walkways:
Alongside the widened roads, new covered drainage channels have been constructed on both sides, addressing long-standing waterlogging issues and promoting a cleaner environment. Handrails are being added to the walkways between the Ottapalam Road Junction and the new bus stand, making pedestrian travel safer and more convenient.

Reclaiming Public Spaces:
A key part of the project has been reclaiming public land and removing encroachments. This has allowed for wider roads and better use of shared spaces, ultimately benefiting the entire community.

Strengthened Regional Connectivity:
Cherpulassery’s facelift is part of a broader regional development plan. The Mundur-Thootha state highway is also being upgraded to four lanes from Mangode to Thootha, with new bridges at Thoothapalam and Kakathode set to further improve access. Renovation of the Panniyamkurussi-Thootha road is underway as well, all contributing to enhanced connectivity and infrastructure across the region.

Financial Overview

The construction phase of this ambitious project is projected to cost around Rs 31 crore, reflecting a strong dedication to modernizing Cherpulassery’s urban landscape. Additional funding is expected to support crucial infrastructure upgrades by agencies such as the Water Authority and KSEB, ensuring the town’s development is comprehensive and well-rounded.
