Discovery of Over 110 Megalithic Structures Near Malampuzha Dam Marks a Landmark Archaeological Find

In March 2025, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) announced the discovery of more than 110 megalithic structures near the Malampuzha Dam in Palakkad, Kerala. This remarkable find, spread across 45 hectares of island-like mounds on hillocks, is among the largest clusters of such structures ever identified in the region and promises to shed new light on the ancient societies of Southern India.

What Are Megalithic Structures?

Megalithic structures are large stone constructions, often serving as burial sites, built without mortar or cement. They were commonly used during the Neolithic, Bronze, and Iron Ages. The newly discovered cluster includes a variety of burial types:

  • Cist graves (small, coffin-like stone boxes, both single and multiple chambered)
  • Stone circles
  • Urns
  • Dolmens and dolmenoid cists (horizontal stone slabs supported by upright stones)

Most of these were constructed with massive granite slabs and boulders, with some also incorporating laterite stones, a material typical of the region.

Significance of the Discovery

The large number which is over 110 megaliths and variety of burial types suggest this was an important site for Iron Age communities. The mix of primary and secondary burials, like funerary urns, points to rich traditions and possible social divisions. These burials can offer important clues about the beliefs, social life, and funeral customs of early Iron Age people in Kerala. The use of different materials like granite and laterite may show changing traditions or cultural influences over time. Megaliths are common in southern India, but this new group near Malampuzha is special because of its size and good condition. It might be similar to other famous sites like Brahmagiri in Karnataka and Adichanallur in Tamil Nadu.

The ASI is continuing its investigations to establish a more precise chronology for the site and to uncover any organic remains or artifacts within the graves. Researchers believe that further study of these structures will deepen our understanding of ancient human settlements and burial practices in Kerala. The discovery of over 110 megalithic structures near Malampuzha Dam is a major archaeological breakthrough. It not only highlights the rich prehistoric heritage of Kerala but also opens new avenues for understanding the region’s ancient societies and their complex burial traditions.
