Hunger Strike in Elappully Against Drug Menace

On June 20, 2025, a hunger strike was held in Elappully, Palakkad, to protest against rising drug abuse and the government’s approval of a new brewery in Mannukkad. Organized by the Anti-alcohol People’s Alliance, the protest drew support from various social and religious groups. It was inaugurated by Mavelikkara Bishop Joshua Mar Ignathios, with Palakkad Bishop Mar Peter Kochupurackal and several social activists also taking part.

The protesters expressed strong concern about the government’s policies, saying they are worsening substance abuse in Kerala. They criticized the move to set up new breweries, arguing it goes against efforts to fight drug addiction. They also called for the power to approve liquor outlets to be given back to local governing bodies, so communities can have more say in such decisions.

A key highlight of the hunger strike was its interfaith unity, with prayers from different religions marking the start of the event. This showed how various communities are coming together to fight addiction. Speakers called for collective action and encouraged those affected by alcohol and drug abuse to join the cause.

The protest in Elappully reflects growing public frustration with government policies on alcohol and drugs. It also shows how local communities are willing to unite and push for more responsible decisions that protect public health and well-being.
