Kanjirapuzha’s ₹167-Crore Tourism Makeover
Kanjirapuzha in Palakkad district is set for a dramatic transformation, thanks to a ₹167-crore tourism development project recently given the green light by the Kerala government. This ambitious initiative will reimagine over 50 acres of land including the sprawling reservoir, lush gardens, and scenic surroundings into one of South India’s most spectacular tourist hubs.
What’s in Store?
This mega project, managed through a public-private partnership, has been awarded to Kozhikode based FSIT Redefine Destination Private Limited, who will hold operating rights for the next 30 years. Once the necessary land acquisition is finalized, work is set to begin, with a target to start construction by the end of this month.
The master plan for Kanjirapuzha includes:
- A Water Theme Park with modern rides for all ages
- Snow World: An indoor experience recreating frosty fun in tropical Kerala
- Bird Park and Marine Oceanarium: Showcasing biodiversity, perfect for nature lovers and families
- Giant Ferris Wheel for panoramic views of the reservoir and Western Ghats
- Boating Facilities across the lake
- 3D Theatre, Ropeway, and a Glass Hanging Bridge for adventure seekers
- Musical Fountain and nightly Laser Show
- Resort and Hotel: For comfortable, extended stays
- Various Aquariums displaying local and exotic aquatic species
Why Kanjirapuzha?
Near Mannarkkad, Kanjirapuzha Dam is known for its peaceful setting, with lush forests, misty hills, and stunning views perfect for picnics and quiet getaways. Earlier, poor tourism facilities kept visitor numbers low. Now, with new developments, Kanjirapuzha is set to become one of South India’s top family holiday spots, offering eco-luxury and adventure tourism while preserving its natural beauty. It promises “a blend of modern comforts and pristine nature.”
Local Impact
Local MLA K Santhakumari, who helped drive the project, says it will greatly benefit residents of Kanjirapuzha and Thachambara panchayats. It is expected to create hundreds of jobs in construction, hospitality, and park operations, while increased visitors will open new opportunities for local businesses and artisans. The project is part of Kerala’s Irrigation Tourism Policy, which promotes sustainable tourism around irrigation sites. The Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) brought in private expertise and chose the best plan through a competitive process.
When Will Visitors See the Changes?
Formal government approval has been granted and FSIT Redefine Destination is preparing to launch the construction phase by the end of July 2025, following final land acquisition steps. The government and developers promise regular updates as the region gears up for its makeover.
From peaceful dam walks and birdwatching to thrilling rides and nature exhibits, the Kanjirapuzha Tourism Project has something for everyone families, travelers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers.
