LHB Coaches Boost Thiruvananthapuram Division as Palakkad Awaits Its Turn

Even after 25 years of introducing LHB (Linke-Hofmann-Busch) coaches for better comfort and safety, their use in the Palakkad Division is still limited. In contrast, the Thiruvananthapuram Division has seen major upgrades, with trains like the Kannur Jan Shatabdi, Mangaluru Express, Nagercoil-Gandhidham Express, Ernakulam-Bengaluru Intercity, Gurudev Express, and Velankanni Express now running with LHB coaches. Prestigious long-distance trains like the Netravati, Venad, Mangala, and Kerala Express in the Thiruvananthapuram Division now run fully with LHB coaches. In contrast, key trains of the Palakkad Division such as the Maveli Express, Malabar Express, West Coast Express, Ernad Express, Parasuram Express, and the Intercity Express still use older ICF coaches, which are less safe and comfortable.

Why does this matter?

LHB coaches are known for better safety (anti-telescopic design), higher speed, more comfort, modular features, and a longer lifespan than ICF coaches. However, passengers in the Palakkad Division still miss out on these benefits, while Thiruvananthapuram’s major trains offer a modern travel experience. This gap has caused frustration locally, especially since much of Kerala’s inter-district and long-distance rail traffic relies on Palakkad Division services.

While LHB coach introduction lags, there have been other advances:

The Palakkad Division is modernizing track infrastructure and level crossings to improve speed and safety. Loop lines are being upgraded for 100 km/h operations, gates are being automated, and rails and sleepers are being replaced for better reliability. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, major stations in the division are also set for modernization with improved facilities, accessibility, waiting areas, and modern amenities.

Passenger voices and demands

Commuter groups and rail users in Palakkad are urging a faster rollout of LHB coaches to ensure safer and more modern travel, similar to the upgrades already seen in Kerala’s southern regions. In short, while Thiruvananthapuram Division leads in LHB coach upgrades and better passenger experience, Palakkad Division is still stuck with old coaches despite station and track improvements. This has strengthened demands for equal railway modernization across Kerala..
