Nilayoram EMS Park – From Dump Yard to Green Haven

Nilayoram EMS Park in Pattambi, Palakkad, represents a transformative approach to urban renewal and public space creation in Kerala. This new park is a prime example of how former waste dumping grounds can be converted into green, accessible spaces for the community. This landmark moment marks a turning point for Pattambi, a town that, until now, had no dedicated public leisure space for families, children, and community gatherings. The park’s opening not only fulfils a long-standing demand from residents but also symbolizes a broader commitment to environmental renewal and urban improvement in the heart of Palakkad district.

The first phase of Nilayoram EMS Park in Pattambi was inaugurated at 4 pm by Minister Roshy Augustine, with MLA Muhammed Muhsin presiding, marking a significant milestone for the town, which until now had no dedicated public leisure space. Developed at a cost of ₹90 lakhs from the MLA’s asset development fund, with an additional ₹50 lakhs approved for the second phase, the project is overseen by a district-level committee led by the Collector and comprising municipal and tourism officials. The initial phase offers basic infrastructure and children’s rides, with plans for future upgrades including fairs showcasing Kudumbashree and tribal products to attract tourism. The park occupies a less-than-an-acre plot that was once a waste dumping ground marred by illegal encroachments; in 2021, the Municipality and Revenue Department reclaimed the site, clearing illegal structures and waste between Pattambi Guruvayurappan Temple and Nambram Road, transforming it into a clean and safe public space. Serving a long-felt community need, the park represents a push towards cleaner, better-planned, and more inclusive urban spaces, with tenders underway for its daily management and continued improvements based on public needs.
