1.Kathakali

Kathakali, one of Kerala’s most famous classical dance forms, has a significant presence and prominence in Palakkad, both as a cultural heritage and as an active art form. While Kathakali is widely recognized throughout Kerala, Palakkad holds a special place in preserving and promoting this intricate art form. Palakkad is home to a number of Kathakali Gurukulas (training centers) where aspiring artists undergo rigorous training in dance, music, acting, and the intricate art of makeup (known as “Chutti”). The art form is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and often depicts stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

2.Kootiyattam

Kootiyattam is an ancient form of Sanskrit theater that is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. It is a highly stylized form of drama that combines acting, music, and elaborate makeup. Though Kootiyattam originated in Kerala, it is particularly cherished in Palakkad, where performances are often held in temples and cultural festivals.Though not as widely performed as in regions like Thrissur, select temples in Palakkad such as those in Thiruvilwamala and Kodunthirapully have a history of hosting Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu performances, especially during annual festivals.

3.Ottanthullal

Ottanthullal is a popular solo dance-drama that incorporates storytelling through song and dance. It originated in Kerala and is known for its lighthearted yet insightful commentary on social issues. The performer, wearing traditional attire, narrates stories in a humorous and satirical manner. In Palakkad, Ottanthullal is commonly performed during temple festivals and cultural events.

4.Vattakkali

Vattakkali is a traditional folk theater form that is unique to Palakkad. This theatrical performance combines storytelling, music, and dance, often with a focus on local social themes or historical events. The actors in Vattakkali wear vibrant costumes and perform in a circular formation. This art form is primarily performed in the rural areas of Palakkad during festive occasions and social gatherings. The lively nature of Vattakkali makes it an important part of Palakkad’s cultural landscape.
