Police heroism and quick thinking prevent tragedy during Palakkad evidence reconstruction
A dramatic incident unfolded in Palakkad during the collection of evidence for a major theft case, capturing local attention and raising questions about police procedure and safety. The accused, Settimani (also known as Manimaran), a native of Warangal, Telangana, was brought by police to Prathibhanagar Colony, Kalmandapam, to reconstruct a housebreaking crime at the residence of V. Sivadas, owner of Kala Hotel and Kala Furniture. Settimani had previously been accused of breaking into a safe at this location and fleeing with ₹7.5 lakh in cash.
As the police team led by SI H. Harshad was wrapping up evidence collection, the situation took a sudden turn. Settimani tried to grab the officer’s service revolver during a conversation. Acting quickly, SI Harshad pushed him onto the staircase and restrained him, preventing any harm. His swift response stopped what could have been a serious or life-threatening incident. In the aftermath of the attempted attack, police conducted a more thorough search of the area, which led to the discovery of several weapons believed to have been used by Settimani in his criminal activities. Among the items recovered were a knife, an iron rod, and a sword stick, all of which had been concealed in a bush near an under-construction house in the neighborhood. The presence of these weapons not only provided further evidence against Settimani but also underscored the level of threat he posed.
This incident is a clear reminder of the risks police face during crime scene investigations and the need for constant alertness and strong safety measures. It also shows how unpredictable suspects can be, especially those who are desperate or violent. For the community, it highlights the tough job police do to keep everyone safe and the importance of giving them continued support and resources.
